As we turn the page from 2024 to 2025, it is my wish that we start on a clean slate more especially in the Climatic World that is under the control of uncertainties. We all know that the current climate change did not happen overnight but is man induced due to various greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities emitted into the atmosphere over a period of about 170 years. The effects of global warming which to some extent can be tagged as a debt that needs to be paid over a long time are being felt by people from all social classes globally as no one is exempted from this.
If were to look at some of the effects of global warming in 2024, any person that is enthusiastic about a conducive environment to live in and enjoy life cannot turn a blind eye or deaf ear to that. On the heat waves front, nearly 5 billion people globally suffered from climate-change-driven extreme heat over 9 days in June 2024. More than 60% of the world population faced extreme heat that was made at least three times more likely by climate change during June 16-24, 2024. Because of these elevated temperatures over the years, ice cap melting across the planet is now occurring at a record rate, with about 28 trillion tonnes of ice lost between 1994 and 2017. Over and above the continuous effect of extreme heat on the ice cap, other dire consequences in 2024 were wildfires such as those experienced in Canada, the Pentanal region in Brazil, Africa, Europe and Oceania. As if that is not too much for humanity on planet earth to bear, in 2024, about 184 countries were affected by floods in one way or another. These floods led to serious damages and loses such as the 300 deaths reported in Kenya,188 injuries, and 75 people reported missing. Tanzania also suffered, with 161 fatalities, 250 injuries, and over 210,000 people affected in several ways. Moving to the tip of Africa, South Africa was also heavily affected by floods which resulted in about 11 fatalities, affecting approximately 16,000 people.
Whilst some countries were complaining about too much water due to flooding from heavy storms, others were affected differently due to lack of water in form of drought. According to the Global Drought Information System, 157 countries faced drought conditions in 2024, with varying levels of severity. Some of the countries in Africa affected included Somalia, South Africa, and Ethiopia, with the latter experiencing its longest and most severe drought ever recorded, as over 10 million people needed assistance due to food shortages resulting from the drought. In India, the drought conditions affected 26% of the country, raising concerns over sugar production and food security.
As Sourcenomix is passionate about sustainability, we do believe that we will play a big part in 2025 through simplifying sourcetainability as this is at the core of the services that we offer globally. With our understanding that concerted efforts are required to mitigate (GHG) emissions in order to transition to a low carbon economy globally, we have partnered with a number of organisations globally to work together and come up with a Mobile Video Game/App which will be among the solutions that must be implemented globally as part of the attempted efforts in minimising global warming. All this is being done to counteract global warming which has dire consequences with unlimited repo effects. This Mobile Video Game/App will promote and stimulate climate resilience, sustainable practices, and global cooperation to mitigate the effects of climate uncertainty. Please watch this space as very soon we will be announcing that solution that we will be launching globally!
